SEO basics for Irish businesses (no jargon)

SEO has a brand problem. Half the industry sells smoke and the other half makes it sound impossibly complex. For 90% of Irish businesses, here's the entire game.

1. Set up Google Business Profile

Free. Takes 20 minutes. Hugely under-used. Verified Profile + accurate hours + 10 photos + 10 reviews gets you on Google Maps for searches like "hairdresser Drumcondra." This alone outranks 80% of paid SEO work.

2. One page per service, with the location in the title

If you do plumbing in Limerick, you want a page titled "Emergency Plumber Limerick — Yourname." Not "Services." Specificity wins. A 4-page site with location-specific titles beats a 15-page site without.

3. Get your name, address and phone identical everywhere

Website footer, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, golden pages, industry directories. Google checks for consistency. "Unit 5" vs "Unit 5," vs "#5" matters.

4. Add LocalBusiness schema

Invisible markup that tells Google "I am a local business, here's my address, hours, services." Any decent developer adds it in 10 minutes. Most templated sites don't.

5. Ask for reviews. On purpose.

Reviews are the single biggest local-SEO factor in 2026. After every job: a short, polite text with a one-tap Google review link. 10 real reviews puts you ahead of competitors with zero.

6. Write one blog post a month, only if you'll keep it up

Optional. If you'll commit to one post per month answering a real customer question, do it. If not, skip it — a half-built blog hurts more than no blog.

What to ignore

  • Cold-call "SEO experts" promising page 1.
  • Buying backlinks. Will get you penalised.
  • Keyword-stuffing your homepage.
  • Endless meta tag tweaks. Diminishing returns after the basics.
